Realistic Expectations

Although today's bow technology has come leaps and bounds, even over the last ten years, the modern compound bow will still not climb a tree and shoot a deer for you. The performance of your bow depends on you, like with racecar driving, a stock car is just a car until it has a race car driver. A bow will only shoot as good as its shooter, so when starting off its important to keep things in perspective. Everyone learns at different rates, and only through your own discipline and practice routine will you be able to determine your maximum effect range. It is realistic to expect that we will deliver on our promise to tune your bow to your exact specifications so all you need to do is practice and finish the fine adjustments.

Being Branded

Too often in archery peers and fancy advertising from companies promising almost guarenteed success with their products sway people to their brand. Just as it is with vehicles, not every brand is perfect for everyone; we all have our own preferences and opinions and should not buy a bow based on brand. It is best to choose a bow based on shooting style, experience, strength and budget.

Manipulation through Marketing

Marketers are very good at their jobs, they will use every legal manipulation of numbers and statistics to persuade you to their product, and so it becomes very important to read through the ads and try and understand where there numbers are coming from. Speed is one of the biggest tools marketers use to sell bows, its usually the largest piece of text in an ad, but its important to understand where IBO speeds come from. Quite simply IBO speed is measured with a 70# draw weight, a 30" draw length, and a 350-grain arrow. It's important to understand that most archers are not a 30" draw and will not shoot at 70#s, so seeing speeds in excess of 300fps (especially with hunting arrows) is unrealistic, but getting speeds between 230fps and 300fps is not. Tournament wins are another major ad manipulation, granted those archers used those bows to win, but the archer won, not the bow. Now the more bows you give out to shoot, the better chance your bows will be winning the tournaments or finishing well. The other major ad manipulation is to through out "technical" terms that are just made up, like "SFC technology" (super fast cam), which mean little to nothing but they sound important. With that being said, most of the technologies they offer are great but you must understand what "SFC technology" really is before your impressed by it.

Can't have your cake and eat it too

There is no bow that is rated at 350fps, draws like silk, extremely forgiving, super lightweight, with low recoil that's built like a tank. If that bow existed every archer would own one. It is important to understand that you are going to have to sacrifice a few of the less important attributes to get the ones you are really looking for. For example, if you want the smoothest draw cycle you may not get the one of the fastest rated bows on the market because they generally have more aggressive cams that hold the peak weight longer to build greater energy.  Every bow is designed to give different attributes to different archers, we all don't want the same thing, so they provide a variety of bows to find the one that feels best for us.

Understand Bow Efficiency

When we talk about a bow's efficiency after setup we are referring to how it performs at specified settings. For example, a bow with an adjustable draw length cam may not perform as efficiently at different draw lengths than a bow with a draw length specific cam. Now obviously you will get different speeds at different draw lengths but the variation in performance may change greater at certain lengths, where as the draw length specific cam is designed to perform at its peak at the specified draw length. We see a similar principle in bow limbs, where for example, a 70# limb set at 60# will not get the same performance as the same bow with a 60# limb set a 60. The reason being that the 60# limb is designed to perform at its peak weight.

Determining Draw Length

The general guideline for measuring draw length is to measure your wingspan, which is the distance between your arms spread from tip to tip. You then divide by 2.5 and that should give you a rough idea, within an inch or so. A longer draw length will give you more speed, but you almost always shoot a little shorter draw length better.
